1/10 · Scrum Team roles, accountabilities & theory
According to the Scrum Guide, Scrum is founded on which theoretical approach to managing complex, adaptive work?
APredictive process control based on fully detailed upfront requirements
BEmpiricism, informed by lean thinking
CSequential, phase-gated (waterfall) planning completed before work begins
DA command-and-control management theory directed by the Scrum Master
Show answer & explanation
B is correct. The Scrum Guide (2020) states that Scrum is founded on empiricism and lean thinking. Empiricism means knowledge comes from experience and decisions are based on what is observed, which is why Scrum uses short, iterative cycles with frequent inspection points. This distinguishes Scrum from predictive, upfront-planning approaches.

2/10 · Scrum events & activities
According to the Scrum Guide (2020), what is the timebox for the Daily Scrum, and does it change with Sprint length?
AOne hour, so every Developer has time to give a detailed status update to the Scrum Master.
B15 minutes, regardless of the length of the Sprint.
CThere is no fixed timebox; the Scrum Master sets the duration based on team size.
D15 minutes for a one-week Sprint, scaling up to 60 minutes for a one-month Sprint.
Show answer & explanation
B is correct. The Scrum Guide (2020) fixes the Daily Scrum at a 15-minute timebox for the Developers, held on every working day of the Sprint. This timebox is constant and does not vary with Sprint duration or team size, keeping the event short and focused on progress toward the Sprint Goal.

3/10 · Scrum Master core competencies
According to the Scrum Guide (2020), the Scrum Master is best described as a:
ARequirements secretary who records whatever the Product Owner dictates.
BProject manager who assigns tasks to Developers to keep the Sprint on schedule.
CSenior developer who makes the final call on technical disputes within the Sprint.
DTrue leader who serves the Scrum Team and the larger organization.
Show answer & explanation
D is correct. The Scrum Guide 2020 states the Scrum Master is accountable for establishing Scrum and is a true leader who serves the Scrum Team and the larger organization, dropping the earlier 'servant leader' terminology. This service orientation underpins all facilitation, teaching, mentoring and coaching activities.

4/10 · Service to the Scrum Team, Product Owner, and Organization
According to the Scrum Guide (2020), the Scrum Master is described as a 'true leader who serves' the Scrum Team, the Product Owner, and the organization. What does this description primarily emphasize about the accountability?
AThe Scrum Master directs the Developers' daily work to ensure Sprint commitments are met.
BThe Scrum Master owns the Product Backlog and sets its order when the Product Owner is unavailable.
CThe Scrum Master is accountable for establishing Scrum as described in the Scrum Guide and helps everyone understand Scrum theory and practice, leading through service rather than positional authority.
DThe Scrum Master reports team performance metrics to senior management to justify the team's existence.
Show answer & explanation
C is correct. The Scrum Guide 2020 replaces 'servant leader' with 'true leader who serves': the Scrum Master is accountable for establishing Scrum and helps everyone understand Scrum theory and practice, leading the Scrum Team, Product Owner, and organization through service rather than authority.

5/10 · Scrum Team roles, accountabilities & theory
The Scrum Guide identifies three pillars that uphold every implementation of empirical process control. Which set correctly names them?
ATransparency, Inspection, and Adaptation
BSprint Planning, Daily Scrum, and Sprint Review
CCommitment, Courage, and Respect
DPlanning, Execution, and Review
Show answer & explanation
A is correct. The Scrum Guide (2020) explains that transparency, inspection, and adaptation are the three pillars that uphold empirical process control. Transparency ensures relevant information is visible, inspection means frequently checking artifacts and progress, and adaptation means adjusting when inspection reveals deviation. All three must be present for empiricism to function.

6/10 · Scrum events & activities
For a one-month Sprint, what is the maximum timebox for Sprint Planning per the Scrum Guide (2020)?
AEight hours.
BFour hours.
CThere is no maximum; Sprint Planning continues until the Sprint Backlog is fully detailed.
DTwo hours are added cumulatively for each week of the Sprint's duration, at the Scrum Master's discretion.
Show answer & explanation
A is correct. The Scrum Guide (2020) caps Sprint Planning at a maximum of eight hours for a one-month Sprint; shorter Sprints usually warrant a shorter event. The timebox exists so planning does not become an open-ended activity that delays starting the work.

7/10 · Scrum Master core competencies
Which statement most accurately distinguishes 'facilitation' from 'teaching' as core Scrum Master competencies?
AFacilitation and teaching are the same activity, only performed at different points in the Sprint.
BFacilitation is used only with the Product Owner, while teaching is used only with the Development Team.
CFacilitation helps a group reach its own outcome through a structured, neutral process; teaching transfers specific knowledge or skills to individuals.
DFacilitation always requires the Scrum Master to stay completely silent, while teaching requires constant talking.
Show answer & explanation
C is correct. CSM Learning Objectives identify facilitating, teaching, mentoring and coaching as four distinct Scrum Master competencies. Facilitation is a neutral, structured process that helps a group produce its own outcome, whereas teaching involves the Scrum Master directly transferring specific knowledge or skills.

8/10 · Service to the Scrum Team, Product Owner, and Organization
A Scrum Team consistently defers refactoring and skips automated test maintenance to hit Sprint Goals faster. Over several Sprints, what is the most likely direct impact of this unmanaged technical debt?
ASprint velocity permanently increases because less time is spent on non-functional work.
BThe cost and risk of making future changes rises, and the team's ability to produce a usable Increment each Sprint is threatened.
CThe Definition of Done automatically expands to compensate for the shortcuts taken.
DTechnical debt has no bearing on the Sprint Goal or the Increment as long as functional acceptance criteria are met.
Show answer & explanation
B is correct. The Scrum Guide 2020 requires every Increment to be usable and to meet the Definition of Done. Skipping refactoring and test maintenance accumulates technical debt, increasing the cost and risk of future changes and jeopardizing the team's ability to deliver usable Increments.

9/10 · Scrum Team roles, accountabilities & theory · hard
The Scrum Guide states the Product Owner is one person, not a committee. Which best explains the rationale behind this requirement?
AThe Scrum Guide requires exactly one person per accountability so that overall Scrum Team size stays within a single Sprint's capacity
BIt allows the Product Owner to also serve as the team's sole technical decision maker regarding how the Increment is built
CSplitting ordering authority for the Product Backlog across multiple people creates conflicting priorities and obscures accountability for maximizing value, slowing decisive Product Backlog management
DA single Product Owner more easily satisfies legal contract requirements common in fixed-price agreements
Show answer & explanation
C is correct. The Scrum Guide states the Product Owner is one person, not a committee, though the Product Owner may represent the needs of many stakeholders in the Product Backlog. A single accountable person avoids conflicting priorities and diluted accountability that a committee-based approach to ordering the Product Backlog would create, enabling decisive, value-focused decisions.

10/10 · Scrum Team roles, accountabilities & theory · hard
Two stakeholders each insist their own feature request must be top priority for the next Sprint, and each separately gets informal agreement from different Developers to work on their request first. According to the Scrum Guide, what should happen?
AThe Scrum Master should decide priority since the Product Owner cannot attend every Daily Scrum
BBoth stakeholders should bring their requests to the Product Owner, who alone decides Product Backlog order, and any Developer commitments made outside that process are not binding
CThe Developers should hold a vote among themselves to decide which stakeholder's request takes precedence
DBoth features should be added to the Sprint Backlog since Developers already agreed informally to each
Show answer & explanation
B is correct. The Scrum Guide states the Product Owner is one person, not a committee, and is accountable for ordering Product Backlog items; anyone wanting to change that order must address the Product Owner. This prevents competing stakeholders from fragmenting priorities by negotiating directly with individual Developers, which would undercut a coherent, value-maximizing backlog.
