1/10 · Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring
A business analyst is deciding how requirements will be elicited, analyzed, and managed on an upcoming project, and whether work will proceed predictively or adaptively. According to BABOK v3, which task does this activity primarily fall under within Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring?
APlan Business Analysis Approach
BPlan Business Analysis Information Management
CPlan Stakeholder Engagement
DIdentify Business Analysis Performance Improvements
Show answer & explanation
A is correct. Plan Business Analysis Approach is the foundational task that determines how all other business analysis work will be conducted, including the choice between predictive and adaptive approaches, the level of formality, activities, timing, and how the team integrates with the broader project. The other tasks plan specific dimensions (stakeholders, information, governance) or monitor performance.

2/10 · Elicitation and Collaboration
A business analyst is about to begin elicitation for a new claims-processing system. Before scheduling any sessions, the BA wants to ensure the right people are involved and that the scope, objectives, and logistics of each session are clear. According to BABOK v3, which task is the BA performing, and what is one of its primary outputs?
AConfirm Elicitation Results, producing confirmed elicitation results
BPlan Stakeholder Engagement, producing a stakeholder engagement approach
CPrepare for Elicitation, producing an elicitation activity plan
DConduct Elicitation, producing elicitation results (unconfirmed)
Show answer & explanation
C is correct. Prepare for Elicitation is the first task in the Elicitation and Collaboration knowledge area. It scopes the work, selects appropriate techniques, identifies and secures the right stakeholders, and arranges supporting materials and logistics. Its defined output is the elicitation activity plan. Conduct Elicitation and Confirm Elicitation Results come later, and Plan Stakeholder Engagement sits in a different knowledge area.

3/10 · Requirements Life Cycle Management
A business analyst is building a traceability matrix. One functional requirement cannot be implemented unless another functional requirement is implemented first, but neither requirement is logically generated from the other. Which type of traceability relationship best describes this situation?
AA derive relationship
BA depends (necessity) relationship
CA satisfy relationship
DA validate relationship
Show answer & explanation
B is correct. BABOK v3 identifies several traceability relationship types under Trace Requirements: derive (one requirement generated from another), depends (an effort or necessity dependency between requirements), satisfy (implementation element fulfils a requirement), and validate (links a requirement to its validating element). When one requirement only makes sense to implement if another is also implemented, that is a necessity-type dependency, captured by the depends relationship.

4/10 · Strategy Analysis
While defining the future state for a logistics company, a business analyst documents a desired outcome as "the warehouse will become more efficient." A senior BA reviews it and asks the analyst to rewrite it as a business objective. According to BABOK v3, which characteristic is the original statement most clearly missing for it to qualify as a well-formed business objective?
AIt has not yet been decomposed into epics and user stories.
BIt does not assign a sponsor accountable for delivering the outcome.
CIt must be expressed as a solution requirement rather than a business need.
DIt is not measurable, so progress and achievement cannot be objectively assessed.
Show answer & explanation
D is correct. Define Future State produces business objectives that describe the results the organization wants to achieve. BABOK v3 advises writing objectives so they are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bounded). "Become more efficient" lacks a metric, target, and timeframe — most fundamentally it is not measurable — so it cannot be used to judge whether the future state has been reached. The other choices reference governance, delivery, or solution concerns that are not the defining quality of a business objective.

5/10 · Requirements Analysis and Design Definition
A business analyst has elicited a set of stakeholder needs and now wants to capture them in a precise, structured form that can be communicated to a technical team. According to BABOK v3, what is the primary purpose of the 'Specify and Model Requirements' task?
ATo obtain stakeholder sign-off and formal approval of the requirements baseline
BTo trace each requirement back to a business objective and forward to a design component
CTo determine which requirements deliver the most value so the team can sequence delivery
DTo analyze, refine, and elaborate requirements and designs into a usable, well-formed representation using text, matrices, and diagrams
Show answer & explanation
D is correct. Specify and Model Requirements is the task in which a BA takes elicited information and represents it precisely using text, matrices, and diagrams (modeling). It is about creating a well-formed, usable representation of requirements and designs. Prioritization, tracing, and approval are distinct tasks within the same knowledge area, each with its own purpose.

6/10 · Solution Evaluation
A business analyst is preparing to evaluate a recently deployed solution. Before any measurement can be meaningfully interpreted, what must first be established as the basis against which the solution's performance will be assessed?
AThe final go-live communication plan distributed to all affected stakeholders
BThe signed-off requirements traceability matrix linking each requirement to a test case
CThe detailed root-cause analysis of every defect logged during user acceptance testing
DThe performance measures and the agreed expectations (targets) that define solution success
Show answer & explanation
D is correct. The Measure Solution Performance task establishes which performance measures will be used and the expected level of performance (targets/expectations). Without agreed measures and targets, collected data cannot be interpreted as success or shortfall. Defect analysis, communication plans, and traceability matrices are valuable but do not constitute the evaluative baseline.

7/10 · Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring
While planning stakeholder engagement for a new payroll system, a business analyst wants a clear way to show, for each major deliverable, which stakeholders must perform the work, who has final approval authority, who must be consulted, and who simply needs to be kept informed. Which technique is best suited to capture these distinct levels of involvement?
AAn onion diagram
BA SWOT analysis
CA RACI matrix
DA context diagram
Show answer & explanation
C is correct. The scenario describes assigning four discrete responsibility levels (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed) to stakeholders for each deliverable, which is precisely what a RACI matrix does. Onion diagrams and personas help characterize stakeholders, and context diagrams define scope, but only RACI captures responsibility assignment in the form described.

8/10 · Elicitation and Collaboration
A warehouse supervisor insists that pickers follow a documented 12-step packing procedure, but error rates suggest otherwise. The BA suspects the actual workflow differs from what stakeholders describe in interviews. Which elicitation technique is BEST suited to capture how the work is genuinely performed?
ASurvey/Questionnaire sent to all pickers
BDocument Analysis of the existing 12-step procedure
CObservation of pickers performing the packing task
DBrainstorming with the supervisor and team leads
Show answer & explanation
C is correct. Observation (also called job shadowing) involves studying stakeholders performing activities in their real environment. It is uniquely effective at eliciting tacit knowledge and revealing discrepancies between documented or described processes and what people actually do. Document Analysis and Surveys rely on potentially inaccurate written or self-reported sources, and Brainstorming targets idea generation rather than capturing current behavior.

9/10 · Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring · hard
After two completed releases, a delivery lead complains that business analysis is 'too slow,' but provides no specifics. The business analyst wants to objectively assess and improve business analysis performance rather than react to the complaint. The team currently tracks only the count of requirements produced per sprint. Which action best reflects the Identify Business Analysis Performance Improvements task and sound use of metrics?
ADocument the complaint as a risk in the risk register and continue current practices, since performance measurement is the project manager's responsibility, not the analyst's
BIncrease the volume of requirements produced per sprint, since that is the metric already being tracked and higher output will address the 'too slow' complaint
CImmediately reassign business analysis tasks to developers to speed delivery, deferring any measurement until the next release
DDefine performance measures tied to agreed objectives (such as rework rate, requirement defect rate, and stakeholder satisfaction), establish them with stakeholders, then analyze results to find root causes and recommend improvements
Show answer & explanation
D is correct. Identify Business Analysis Performance Improvements requires the analyst to determine performance measures, agree them with stakeholders, conduct analysis to understand the cause of variances, and recommend preventive or corrective actions and improvements. Defining quality- and value-oriented measures (rework, defects, satisfaction), validating them with stakeholders, and analyzing root causes is the correct, evidence-based path. Chasing raw output, reactively reassigning work, or disowning the responsibility all fail this task.

10/10 · Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring · hard
A bank is launching a high-uncertainty mobile-onboarding product where customer needs are expected to evolve rapidly and early feedback is critical, yet a strict regulatory regime requires that certain compliance requirements be fully specified and signed off before any release. The business analyst must recommend an approach in the Plan Business Analysis Approach task. Considering the BACCM core concept of delivering value while managing change under these constraints, which recommendation is most defensible?
AUse a fully adaptive approach for everything, treating the regulatory requirements as backlog items to be refined iteratively like the rest
BAdopt a hybrid approach: handle the evolving customer-facing requirements adaptively with iterative feedback, while specifying and formally signing off the fixed regulatory requirements predictively
CUse a fully predictive approach so that all requirements, including the evolving customer-facing ones, are defined and baselined up front
DDefer the approach decision until after the first release, then choose predictive or adaptive based on observed change rate
Show answer & explanation
B is correct. Plan Business Analysis Approach explicitly allows for predictive, adaptive, or hybrid approaches selected to fit the context, and the BACCM concepts of Change and Value guide the analyst to maximize value while managing the cost and risk of change. Here the customer-facing needs are volatile and value-sensitive (favoring adaptive iteration), while the regulatory requirements are fixed and must be baselined and signed off (favoring predictive). A hybrid approach resolves both forces; the fully predictive, fully adaptive, and deferred options each violate one of the constraints.
