Short answer: PMI-RMP is worth it if risk management is already a real part of your job, on large or regulated projects where someone is paid to own the risk register, and you want a credential that names that skill. It is not worth it as a first certification, as a way into project management, or as a substitute for PMP when your target employers ask for PMP. PMI's PMI-RMP certification page and the PMI-RMP Handbook set the price at $520 for members and $670 for non-members, and the entry bar at 12 to 36 months of risk management experience plus 30 to 40 hours of risk education. Every price and rule below was checked against PMI documents on 5 November 2026.
What PMI-RMP actually certifies
PMI-RMP is PMI's specialist credential for project risk management. PMP asks whether you can run a project. PMI-RMP asks whether you can run the risk process of a project: plan it, find risks, analyse them, choose responses and close them out.
That narrow focus is both the value and the limit. It tells an employer something PMP does not: that you have done risk work for at least a year and can handle risk analysis, including the numbers. It also means the credential only matters where risk is a separate job or a large part of one.

The 15 pretest questions are mixed in with the scored ones and you cannot tell which is which, so treat all 115 as real. Our PMI-RMP exam format page keeps the same facts in one place.
The five domains
The Examination Content Outline weights five domains. These percentages decide how many questions you get from each one.
| Domain | Weight | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| Risk Identification | 23% | Techniques for finding risks, the risk register, documenting risks |
| Risk Analysis | 23% | Qualitative and quantitative analysis, prioritisation, exposure |
| Risk Strategy and Planning | 22% | Risk management plans, methods, stakeholder risk appetite and thresholds |
| Monitor and Close Risks | 19% | Tracking risks and responses, reporting, closing and lessons learned |
| Risk Response | 13% | Choosing, planning and owning responses to threats and opportunities |

Identification and analysis together make up 46% of the exam. Risk Analysis is where most people with PMP-level knowledge get caught out, because PMP touches quantitative risk analysis and PMI-RMP expects you to work with it: expected monetary value, sensitivity, simulation outputs and what they mean for a decision.
The eligibility bar is the real filter
Unlike most certifications on this site, PMI-RMP is not something you can study for and book. You have to show risk management experience first.
| Your education | Risk management experience (last 5 years) | Risk management education |
|---|---|---|
| Secondary diploma | 36 months | 40 contact hours |
| Four-year degree | 24 months | 30 contact hours |
| Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a GAC-accredited program | 12 months | 30 contact hours |

Three details matter more than they look:
- The experience must be in project risk management, not in project work in general. Leading a project where you also kept a risk log is a weak claim. Running risk workshops, owning the register or doing the analysis is a strong one.
- Applications can be audited. If yours is picked, PMI asks for proof of your experience and education, and your one-year eligibility period only starts after the audit is complete.
- You get one year and three attempts. If you fail three times inside that year, PMI makes you wait a year from the last attempt before you can apply again.
Our PMI-RMP eligibility page breaks down the three paths. If you cannot honestly describe 12 to 36 months of risk work, the answer to "is it worth it" is simple: not yet.
What it really costs
| Item | Member | Non-member |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee | $520 | $670 |
| Re-examination, per attempt | $335 | $435 |
| 30-40 contact hours of risk education | Set by the provider | Set by the provider |
| Renewal every 3 years | 30 PDUs plus PMI's renewal fee | 30 PDUs plus PMI's renewal fee |
Sources: PMI-RMP Handbook (exam and re-exam fees), PMI's certification maintenance page (renewal). The PMI-RMP cost page on this site keeps the same figures.
The membership question is simple arithmetic. A member saves $150 on the exam and $100 on every re-exam. If PMI's annual membership in your country costs less than $150 (check the current price on pmi.org/membership), the member route is cheaper even if you pass first time. If you are not sure you will pass first time, it is cheaper still.
A note on prices you may see. PMI raised the PMP fee on 6 August 2026 (see our PMP cost breakdown). We found no matching change for PMI-RMP in PMI's documents, and $520/$670 are the figures training providers also quote in 2026. If you are budgeting to the dollar, confirm the price in PMI's checkout before you pay.
Who PMI-RMP is worth it for
| Your situation | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Project risk manager or risk analyst on large programmes | Worth it | The credential names exactly what you do, and you already meet the experience bar |
| PMP holder in construction, infrastructure, energy, defence, finance or pharma | Worth it | Risk is a separate discipline in these industries, and RMP shows depth PMP does not |
| PMO or governance role that owns the risk process | Usually worth it | It gives you authority when you set the risk method for other project managers |
| Project manager who wants a first PMI credential | Get PMP first | PMP is the one employers ask for; see our PMP cost and value guide |
| New to projects, no risk experience | Not eligible yet | Look at CAPM as an entry point instead |
| Enterprise, financial or operational risk outside projects | Check first | PMI-RMP is about project risk; ask whether your employers recognise it |
| Business analyst | Usually skip | A BA certification says more to BA employers |
PMI publishes no pass rate and no official study hours for PMI-RMP, so we give neither. We also do not quote salary figures for RMP holders: we found no recent PMI source that separates them from PMP holders, and numbers from training providers are marketing, not data.
How to prepare if you go for it
The 30 or 40 contact hours you need for eligibility are the start, not the whole preparation. Use the Examination Content Outline as your syllabus and work through the domains in the order a real risk process runs:
- Week 1: PMI's risk vocabulary (appetite, threshold, exposure, secondary and residual risk) and Risk Strategy and Planning.
- Week 2: Risk Identification, the joint largest domain.
- Week 3: Risk Analysis, both qualitative and quantitative. Do the maths by hand until EMV and decision trees feel routine.
- Week 4: Risk Response and Monitor and Close Risks.
- Weeks 5-6: full timed mocks at 115 questions in 150 minutes, and an error log by domain.
The six weeks are our plan for someone who already does risk work, not a PMI figure. Our PMI-RMP practice bank follows the same five domains, and each domain page above shows free questions with explanations.
Verdict
PMI-RMP answers a narrower question than PMP: "can this person run the risk process on a serious project?" If your work already answers yes and your industry treats risk as its own discipline, $520 for members is a reasonable price for putting that on your CV with PMI's name behind it. If you are still building project experience, or your employers ask for PMP by name, get PMP first. PMI-RMP is a specialist credential, and it pays off when you already work as a specialist.
