Short answer: OCUP 2 Intermediate is worth it if you build UML models for a living and want proof that goes beyond reading diagrams. If you mainly read UML, write use cases or sketch activity diagrams for developers, Foundation already says what you need it to say, and the next $350 is better spent elsewhere. OMG's UML certification page lists the same $350 price for every level and makes Foundation the mandatory first step. The Intermediate exam info sheet describes 90 questions in 105 minutes with 51 correct needed to pass. Every price, rule and number below was checked on omg.org on 3 November 2026.
What changes between Foundation and Intermediate
OMG describes the three levels by what the holder can do. Foundation is for someone who can interpret UML diagrams and work on a modeling team. Intermediate is for practitioners who can "design and generate interoperating modules" and explain the full UML diagram suite. Advanced is for the company UML expert. The exam numbers tell a less obvious story.
| OCUP 2 Foundation | OCUP 2 Intermediate | |
|---|---|---|
| Exam code | OMG-OCUP2-FOUND100 | OMG-OCUP2-INT200 |
| Prerequisite | None | Passed Foundation |
| Questions | 90 | 90 |
| Time, native English-speaking countries | 120 minutes | 105 minutes |
| Time, all other countries | 150 minutes | 135 minutes |

A lower pass mark is not a sign of an easier exam. OMG sets a cut score of 57% because the questions go deeper into the specification. Foundation asks whether you can read a class or sequence diagram. Intermediate asks what happens to tokens in an interruptible region, which pseudostate fires first, or how a port connects a part to its environment. You also get fifteen minutes less for the same 90 questions.
What Intermediate covers
The Intermediate sheet weights eight areas of the UML 2.5.1 specification. The weights below are OMG's, and they are the same eight areas our OCUP 2 Intermediate exam format page shows.
| Area | Weight | What is new compared with Foundation |
|---|---|---|
| Activities & Actions | 20% | Object, central buffer and data store nodes, interruptible regions, pins, expansion regions |
| Basic Structure | 16% | Namespaces and imports, constraints, dependencies, time and intervals, information flows |
| Interactions | 14% | Gates, all combined fragment operators, interaction uses, communication diagrams |
| StateMachines & Use Cases | 13% | Regions, history, all pseudostates, transition selection, protocol state machines |
| Components | 12% | Provided and required interfaces, deployment, artifacts |
| Common Behavior | 10% | Behaviors, events, triggers, signals and receptions |
| Structured Classifiers | 9% | Parts, ports, connectors, collaborations |
| Classification | 6% | Redefinition, generalization sets, instances |
Activities and the structure areas together make up more than half of the exam. For many analysts the hard part is the 21% in Components and Structured Classifiers. These elements barely appear in Foundation, and they are rarely drawn in day-to-day requirements work. If your models never show a port or a deployment node, expect to learn these chapters from scratch.
What it costs
| Item | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation exam (required first) | $350 | OMG UML certification page |
| Intermediate exam | $350 | same page |
| November 2026 promotion | 15% off all OMG exams and vouchers, vouchers good for 1 year | same page, checked 3 November 2026 |
| Retake after a fail | 20% discount code in your score report | same page |
| Validity | 3 years from the exam date | Intermediate exam info sheet |
So the route to Intermediate is $700 in exam fees at list price, before tax and training. If you plan to sit Intermediate within the next year, the November promotion is the one discount in this table with a deadline. A voucher bought now at 15% off stays valid for a year.
A note on lower prices you may see. Some training providers still quote OCUP 2 exams at around $210. We could not find that figure on any current OMG page, which says that "each exam is $350". Check the price in the Pearson VUE checkout before you build a budget on a lower number.
Since 1 October 2025 OMG's assets belong to the EDM Association, and Pearson VUE lists the program as "EDMA-Certified Unified Modeling Language Professional 2 (OCUP 2)" (Pearson VUE OMG page). The exam codes and the info sheets on omg.org stayed the same, so if you see the EDMA name when you book, you are in the right place.
The expiry rule changes the calculation
OCUP 2 certifications expire three years after the exam date. You extend them by passing the same exam again or a higher-level one (Intermediate exam info sheet). In practice this means:
- If you stop at Foundation, renewing costs $350 every three years for the same exam.
- If you pass Intermediate, you renew Foundation at the same time. You spend the same $350, but the credential on your CV moves up a level.
- If you plan to keep OCUP 2 long term, Intermediate is the cheaper way to renew. You were going to pay for one exam within three years anyway.
That is the strongest financial argument for Intermediate. It is not $350 on top of Foundation forever. It replaces your next Foundation renewal.
Who Intermediate is worth it for
| Your situation | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| System analyst or architect who builds large UML models | Worth it | You use the components, ports and state machine depth that the exam tests |
| Model-driven developer or modeling tool specialist | Worth it | Intermediate is the level that tests modules you generate code from |
| Planning OCUP 2 Advanced | Required | Advanced needs a passed Intermediate |
| Foundation expires within a year and you want to keep OCUP 2 | Worth it | It renews Foundation and adds a level for the same fee |
| Business analyst writing use cases and activity diagrams | Usually stop at Foundation | Your daily UML is covered; a BA certification shows more to BA employers |
| Process modeling in BPMN rather than systems in UML | Skip | Look at OCEB 2 instead |
OMG publishes no pass rate and no official study hours for Intermediate, so we give neither. Employers rarely list OCUP 2 Intermediate by name in BA job ads. Its value is as proof of a specific skill, often in consulting, regulated industries or tool vendors, where models are deliverables and not just illustrations.
How to prepare if you go for it
Use the UML 2.5.1 specification chapters listed in the Intermediate info sheet as your syllabus, not a general UML book. Foundation material covers the most-used subset and leaves out half of what Intermediate weights. Our OCUP 2 Intermediate how-to-pass page has a six-week plan. The six weeks are our assumption for someone who passed Foundation recently, not an OMG figure. In order:
- Week 1: Activities & Actions, the largest area at 20%. Practise tracing tokens until you stop guessing.
- Week 2: Basic Structure and Classification.
- Week 3: Interactions, including communication diagrams.
- Week 4: StateMachines & Use Cases and Common Behavior.
- Week 5: Components and Structured Classifiers, the areas Foundation does not prepare you for.
- Week 6: two timed mocks at 105 minutes. Look up every miss in the specification.
Our OCUP 2 Intermediate practice bank has 256 questions across the same eight areas, and each area page above shows five free questions with explanations. The exam includes UML diagram images. We describe diagrams in text, so draw them yourself as you practise. The cost page and eligibility page keep the fees and the prerequisite in one place. If you have not passed Foundation yet, start with our OCUP 2 Foundation study plan and Foundation practice questions.
Verdict
Foundation answers "can this person read our models?". Intermediate answers "can this person build them?". If your job needs the second answer, or you want to keep OCUP 2 beyond its three-year expiry, Intermediate is good value: the same $350 as a Foundation renewal, and a level higher. If your UML stops at use cases and activity diagrams in requirements documents, Foundation is enough. Put the next $350 into a credential your target employers name in their job ads.
